Early Encounters in Aotearoa

Early Encounters in Aotearoa

Hi readers, today I am going to be telling you about the sheet we were writing in getting answers from a video the class was watching.

The first explorer to arrive in Aotearoa was Abel Tasman.

Able Tasman arrived in Aotearoa in 1642.

Able Tasman gave New Zealand its name, in Maori its called Nova Zealandia.

The next explorer was James Cook.
James Cook arrived in 1769

The name of one of the chief explorers was Tupaia

The Europeans bung Pigs, Rats, Potatoes  and Diseases

A musket is a gun that shoots gum powder - shotgun.

The musket wars ended in the late 1830's.

In the 1840's the ratio of Maori to Pakeha was 40 Maori for 1 Pakeha.

I hope you enjoyed reading and learnt something from this,

  1. Ka pai Shania! You have recorded lots of great information about the early encounters in Aotearoa. Nova Zealandia was the dutch name for New Zealand. The Maori called it Aotearoa, meaning Land of the Long White Cloud. I did enjoy reading your post and look forward to many more.
